We have a borderline epidemic on our hands. The events at Santana High, Columbine and at other schools across the country continue the frightening pattern of kids shooting kids. The anger and frustration of young people who don't know where to turn is boiling over into despair and desperation. Anger and rage are endemic and systemic problems that are becoming epidemic in our society. The shootings are the most extreme manifestation of an insidious virus that has infected our culture.

Last April, my son Adam and I were interviewed by reporter Mark O'Keefe for the Newhouse News Service' first anniversary story on the shootings at Columbine - "Columbine Shootings Resonate More in Individual Lives than in American Society." During the interview, Mark asked my thoughts on what caused this pattern of behavior.

My answer: VALUES' INVERSION. A values' inversion results when we over-value social approval and recognition, money, material things, power over others, prestige, work and success, and under-value the self-esteem and self-worth of ourselves, and others. It is when this values inversion occurs that we see behaviors that include bullying, as well as the fear and ultimate acting out of those who are their targets.

Fortunately there is something we can do. We can help our kids recognize and acknowledge their inner value and their talents so they can use them to make their lives work better.
