The Most Important Question I've Been Asking????

I've been thinking of a question that hit me right after I picked up the phone to call my mom last Tuesday to wish her a Happy Birthday. Mom turned 85 on 9/11/01. God bless her. God bless all of us. Just as I was to call her, Adam's mom Anita called and said, "Turn on the TV. Something's going on at the trade center." This was before 9am.

What I saw made me gasp, and scream out loud, "Oh my god, they bombed the Twin Towers." Within minutes, live coverage from a helicopter showed the unspeakable horror; the second airplane slicing through south tower. For a split second it was as if the building just opened and absorbed the plane in its bowels, then sealed closed again. The explosion of fuel; the south tower spitting out a massive fireball jolted me back where I stood.

I will never forget the image of the World Trade Center crumbling as long as I live. It will forever be a reminder of life in perspective whenever I feel impatient, frustrated, argumentative, confrontational, ignored, unappreciated, dissed, or angry. Let the bombs of darkness turn into beacons of light that illuminate our lives from this day forth.

I can't stop thinking about this question. It's haunting me. It's been especially loud today, the first day of the Jewish New Year. I invite you to think about it as we begin to choose our future:

"WHAT WOULD GOD DO?"

What is HIS message, her higher meaning?
What would SHE have us learn from this earth-shaking event?
What would be God's highest aspiration for us now?

What is it we are meant to find out about ourselves through this shared experience of six billion? This is by far, the most psychically shocking and viscerally searing event ever to be witnessed by billions of people in the history of the earth.

What kinds of human breakdowns have created a world in which its people can be filled with such deep hate and contempt for humanity itself?

It takes extreme self-hate to kill so many others. The dis-valuation of human life is the greatest sin against humanity, and against whatever god you may worship, even if you don't worship any god at all. It takes extreme thinking, desperation and a feeling of insignificance to take the lives of others.

What incredible breakthrough awaits humankind on the other side of this?

If we could be transported ahead 50 years and be able to see our legacy to our grandchildren's children, what kind of world would we picture? Would it look like downtown New York?

Which image will we see? Devastation, or Cooperation?

War leads to devastation. Justice requires cooperation. Right now, the world has an unprecedented opportunity to co-operate. Only our grandchildren's children will be able to tell us if we made good choices. Either way, we'll be gone. What will be our legacy?
What would we be saying about the choices we made in 2001 when destiny itself was in the balance?

THE DEFINING MOMENT OF OUR GENERATION!

We will rise above revenge, move past our anger and hatred, and allow our choices to be driven by love, and justice. Love is not always passive. True love seeks a gut check every now and then. This is one of those times. I don't believe there is such a thing as "tough love." There is nothing tough about love at all.

But there is justice. Sometimes justice is tough. But war is not how we bring people to justice in our society. Regardless of the scope of the crime, this is a crime. Yes it is a crime against humanity of unequaled proportion, it is still a crime.

I feel there is no accident about the timing of the events of the last week. Too many things came together on the 9.11 date (911) timed to be a self-fulfilling prophecy. The incredible site of the WTC exhaling flames, breathing for its very life in its own way, saved a lot of lives last week. Any other building in the country would have buckled upon impact, swayed and tipped over, immediately taking with it dozens of buildings and tens of thousands more people. That was REALLY what they wanted. They didn't want 6,000 casualties, they wanted 100,000 people to die.

I have always thought of Fall as the real start of a new year, not just for its religious and spiritual connection, but also from the perspective of Mother Nature. This is the time of year when school is back in session, the leaves change and we harvest our crops. It's a time to begin again. We've never felt so strongly about beginning again as we do this year.

It is at this time of year that we harvest our bounty according to the Law of the Farm. What we have sown and nurtured, we measure by what we reap.

What can we learn about how we interact with the world?
Will we ever know peace again?

We can lead militarily.

Can WE lead from truth?

We are the world's ONLY Super-power (or so we thought).

Can we also become the world's Spiritual power?

Are we big enough to express our regret and sorrow for the thousands of people our bombs have killed and maimed (even in Afghanistan), and the millions more our economic sanctions are starving to death? If we are big enough to be "AT ONE" with God, we will pray for those we've killed as well as for those they've killed.

We are the United States of America. We cherish our freedom of speech. Let us never write a blank check to people who have the power to destroy the world as we know it, including our own people. The majority is not always right, nor may they always choose well. Choices made during times of high fever and fervor are not always the best choices in the end. Let us weigh our choices carefully, and let the MINORITY voices be heard.

JUST AS POLITICAL AND RELIGIOUS LEADERS DECIDE OUR FATE, SPIRITUAL LEADERS MUST HAVE INPUT INTO OUR FUTURE.

We want to ask...

WHAT WOULD GOD DO?

Would God want us to destroy his beautiful creation, and an unspeakable number of its infinitely valuable inhabitants?

Would God want us to jeopardize our children's future by raining bombs and terror upon HIS world?

Would God want us to fill our hearts so full or rage and hate and retribution and revenge that we would turn into those we seek to destroy?

Would God want us to give the extreme few the power and mandate to turn the many into "collateral damage" in our search to destroy evil few?

Would God want us to frighten our children to their very core in fear of WWIII and the end of the world as we know it?

WHAT WOULD GOD DO, RIGHT NOW?

What will the god in you do, right now?
