Do you put yourself in the path of opportunity?

I really am amazed when I hear someone say they can't find a good opportunity. Opportunities abound. They are everywhere. I notice some people put themselves into the path of opportunity, and when it comes calling, they answer the door.

Other people can go an entire lifetime and find scarcely an opportunity worth pursuing. Are these people living in the same world? Seems not.

As I write this, I can count no less than five real, bona fide, serious opportunities right in front of me now. There is no lack of opportunity, especially in today's world. There is only a lack of seizing opportunity.

For most of us, life presents a cornucopia of opportunity. There is absolutely NOTHING external in the way of finding, pursuing and capitalizing on any opportunity you have passion about, find purpose, and see payoff in. Three keys are purpose, passion, AND payoff.

If you find purpose in what you do, passion in why you do it, and it affords you the kind of payoff you're looking for (financially, emotionally, psychically, and spiritually), there is nothing that can stop you. If you don't have purpose, passion or a payoff, nothing can help you: except finding purpose, passion and payoff.

The only thing that stands between you and opportunity is YOU.

Sometimes, we need to get out of our own way. I'm guilty of that. There is NOTHING that stands between opportunity and me but ME!

One of the most important of all Success-Abilities™ is response-ability. As we strengthen our ability to respond to what life brings, we move from a state of reaction to a state of pro-action. We can capitalize opportunity for all it's worth when we shift our stance from victim to victor.

People who put themselves in the path of opportunity, and who see poss-ability, find more opportunity and poss-ability than they can pursue in a dozen lifetimes. Every day is rich with opportunity and poss-ability. Others find little or no opportunity and see limited poss-ability in an abundant world.

It has nothing to do with THE WORLD. It has everything to do with our view of it. Remember the globe exercise? How much of the world is water depends on where you sit, and what you look at. How much opportunity and poss-ability is available to you depends on where you sit, and what you look at.

If you want to see more of what's available to you, and expand your opportunities and poss-abilities, you may want to expand your view of yourself and the world. Pay somebody to help you see more of what's there, and find the opportunity that will be your horse to ride. Invest in a personal coach. A skilled pro can help you see more of what's available to you than you might be able to see by yourself.

2. BUSINESS SKILL FOR LIFE

Leverage Your Talents in the Highest and Best Way

In the last issue we spoke about identifying and defining your time value in hourly terms. NOW, it's "time" to find out how to mine your untapped gold. There are few leverage points so under-utilized as our talents and abilities.

I don't know how they arrived at this, but Stanford Research Institute came to the sobering conclusion that we tap only 5% to 10% of our mental capacity, talents and abilities. Our upside potential is so enormous; maybe it's unfulfill-able in one lifetime. Let's give it a try, though.

If this is true for us personally, can it also be true for us professionally? Can our work, career or business have 10 times more potential? Maybe 100 times more potential? What about your income? Yikes! What would you do with all that money (and free time)?

We talked about how a quantum leap jumps us through many levels without touching all the bases in between. Leveraging your talents is the stuff of quantum leaps. When you truly tap into the vein of gold of your talents and abilities, there's no telling what can happen. We know stories of people who "hit their stride" or are "in the flow" and we wonder, "How (and when) can I experience that myself?"

Joseph Campbell has been quoted as saying, "Follow your bliss." How do you know what your bliss is? And when you do find it, how do you follow it, turn it into a livelihood and, make a living at it? It's not easy to follow your bliss, and it's even harder to make a living following it.

We have been conditioned and trained throughout life to work on and improve our deficits, weaknesses and shortcomings. We have bought into the idea that we ought to, or are supposed to become good at whatever we do. For some of us that means being good at everything. For far too many, it means being "perfect" at everything we do. I say, "HUMBUG!"

Michaelangelo didn't play the piano, and Mozart didn't do ceilings!

Self-knowledge, self-awareness, and self-understanding are the keys to success and satisfaction in life, livelihood, and living! Truly knowing yourself is perhaps the most critical information you can have in any aspect of life. It is especially critical for the complexities of owning and running a successful business, and the increasing challenge of advancing your career in today's marketplace.

No skill, product knowledge or personality trait has as much potential for influencing your personal success as having a clear and honest understanding of those areas you value most, have the most talent and demonstrate the best ability. We set a quantum leap in motion when we locate, and live in alignment with our highest values, talents and abilities.

A treasure trove of added fulfillment and positive results await when you lean on your strengths and spend more time on the activities that produce better results, more cash flow and greater personal enjoyment.

Accept your limitations, and release the pressure to be good at everything. We gain control by release, by not allowing limitations to get in the way of our success. Why do we feel compelled to battle with our deficits? Life is too short to become good at everything we attempt.

Start taking inventory of your talents and abilities subjectively (you can do this objectively, precisely and scientifically using our Value Profile: http://axelrodlearning.com/careersuccess.html).

Start to spend more time leveraging your strengths, not trying to bolster your "weaknesses" or deficits. If you want to be a "jack-of-all-trades" and master of none, you will develop into a well-rounded person. This is noble, and actually, very helpful in an era where multiple skills are often needed.

But as a jack-of-all-trades, you will not be paid as highly, earn as much, or make as big a contribution as if you actualize at least one ability or specialized skill. To reach the peak of your value-ability, market-ability and finance-ability, aim to master at least one of your talents. This will enable you to command top dollar as an accomplished professional or expert in your field. As you master a talent and contribute it to society, you will be rewarded in kind. You can then leverage yourself into any other field you choose.

It took me years to acknowledge that my true gifts were as a speaker and writer, and personal coach. It was a tough thing to accept that I'm simply not as good at self-promotion and marketing my own services. I don't really like running a business, either. I spent years trying to be good at something I didn't value, rather than allow (and accept) that someone else could do it better than I can.

When I released that need to be good at everything, and focused on my attention on my gifts, what I love most and do best, the universe started to move. People began to show up who were eager and better equipped to market and sell me than I was. It could have happened sooner, if I weren't so stubborn about trying to be good at EVERYTHING I do.

You CAN be extraordinary in more than one endeavor, or many areas of life. Much of the richness of life exists in the diversity of it. As you pursue a well-rounded life, find the special gifts you have. Then, ride that horse for all its worth. It will be one of the best rides of your life.

Work every day to do what you value most. As Abraham Lincoln said, "I will study and prepare myself. One day my time will come."

Could today be that day?

Inventory your top skills, talents and abilities. Ask other people what they feel you are good at doing, and what are your best personal and professional strengths. Don't overlook the inter-personal, or softer skills. These are highly valued in today's new economy.

Determine which of your talents and abilities are, or can be, most valuable in the marketplace? Be determined to get really good at what you DO WELL and ENJOY MOST. In an inter-dependent world, being independent is not enough. Have faith that other people will emerge who can, and will, support you.
