Out of Ten Baby Boomers Work Forever?
Because They Will Need the Money to Survive!

*** Along comes N.Y. University
economist, Edward
Wolf, with even more discouraging news. Retirement
wealth for people between 47 and 64 years old shrank 11%
between 1983 and 1998. The biggest boom in history shrank
the average net worth of near-retirees from $133,700 in
1983 down to $110,400 in 1998.
*** Almost 20% of 47-plus year-olds
anticipating
retirement will have incomes below the poverty line,
says Wolf. Currently, only 10% of retirees are poor.
What went wrong? People didn't save. Traditional
pensions gave way to 401-k plans, which allowed people
to cut back on their retirement contributions. And the
bull market on Wall Street encouraged them to think that
they didn't need to make economies.
*** Wolf's study ended with '98.
Surely, the numbers are
much worse today. Eighty percent of baby boomers say
they intend to keep working past retirement age, because
they need the money.

The Baby Boomers face a financial
crisis unlike any past
generation has known. The combination of increasing cost
of living, shrinking retirement wealth, reduced buying power,
uncertain investment markets, job and social insecurity, and
extended life expectancy conspire to turn the masses of
Baby Boomers into the "forever working" class.
Most are not prepared. Many are not even aware.
My first company was Money Managers,
Inc. In 1978,
we started showing people from all walks of life how to use
their money to get the kinds of investment returns banks
and insurance companies were getting.
We discussed the importance of having all three types of income:
1- Active (job,
or whatever you trade your time for);
2- Passive (dividends, income from stocks, bonds, real estate,
etc.);
3- Residual (royalties, residuals, buyouts, annuities, etc.)
Almost everyone has active income.
Many have passive income.
Less than 1% have residual income.
Most of the 1% are authors, entertainers,
artists, athletes and
as crazy as this sounds, network marketers. That's right.
Among the 1% of our population
who are financially free are
the small percentage of successful people who get paid residual
income to market products and services from their home.
Much maligned and stigmatized,
network marketing has become
the most effective vehicle to build residual income. For most
people, it's the ONLY real option for residual income (other than
amassing a big chunk of money and buying an annuity for life).
Here's
a little secret: many
"gurus" who have best-selling
books generate far more residual income from their network
marketing businesses than they do from their books!
Few books continue
to pay royalties after a couple of years.
So authors keep writing new books. Writing a book is work.
You trade time for it. BIG TIME. That's active income.
That's why authors get advances. Most books never earn
the publisher back the advance, which means zero residual
income for the author.
If a book becomes a best-seller,
the royalties can be huge,
and can continue for years. That's rare indeed. It's really
hard to keep cranking out best-sellers and to continue to
generate residual income from them. A scant few do.
Even highly paid CEOs know they
are one bad earnings report
away from being an ex-CEO.
For most of us working stiffs, we must pursue other options.
There is an increasing likelihood
that active and passive income
will NOT take you the distance. Even if it does, having residual
income lets you sleep a whole lot better at night, and enjoy life
a whole lot more during the day.
Stress is raging, causing dis-ease
physically and emotionally.
Money is a major source of stress. Worrying about not having
enough impacts the joy of life and weakens the immune system.

* life insurance if you die,
* disability insurance if you can't work,
* homeowners insurance in case of fire or theft,
* property and casualty if you own real estate,
* health insurance for sickness and medical bills,
* auto insurance if you have a car accident.

everything we own.
Over a lifetime,
we spend hundreds of thousands of dollars

Blow Away Fear and Master the Art of Self-Promotion!
They say sequels aren't as good
as the originals. Not when it comes
to Pearls of Wisdom. I had the great good fortune to have 14 days
of
incredible, indelible insights from two explosive learning weekends.
After spending three days with
marketing legend Gary Halbert, last
weekend I went to Book Expo America. All I can say is WOW!
The energy and excitement level at BEA is off the charts. People
come with high expectations and exude positive vibes.
BEA is an I-CAN energy field,
where dreams are still alive and well.
Tens of thousands of people and a few thousand companies come
to
BEA. It's the BE-All and end-all of publishing conventions.
I got dozens more pearls after
spending a day with my friends,
best-selling authors Mark Victor Hansen and Robert Allen, and
a
morning with producers from Today, Good Morning America,
The Early Show, 48 Hours and syndicated radio host Barry Farber.
On Friday, we had a special surprise.
Don King burst into the room.
He had the crowd buzzing. Love him or hate him, he generates a
whirlwind everywhere he goes. Don King is passionate about what
he does. He's in love with America (he carried the same flag he
waved
at Bob Costas when Costas grilled him last week on HBO sports).
Is Don King is THE CONSUMMATE PROMOTER?

Here's some of what he said (paraphrased, he speaks so fast):
"People think
I'm in the boxing business. I'm not. I'm in the
promotion business. Boxing is just the vehicle. You are in the
promotion business. Your book is a vehicle. If you don't promote
your book it won't sell by itself. Nobody can sell your book better
than you. You have to believe in who you are and what you're doing.
You're in the promotion business."
Yes, we're ALL in the promotion
business. And for many of us,
we'd rather chew glass. It turns off many people when they watch
Don King go on and on with his shameless self-promotion. I was
one of those people. Until last Friday. Now, I'm a Don King fan.
He even agreed to be featured in an upcoming book I'm writing.
The Fear of Self-Promotion is Worse than the Fear of Failure!
There is BIG learning here that
transcends the simple act of self-
promotion. At the core is a massive disconnect between our beliefs
and the real world. We see self-promotion as selfish and self-serving
(it is). For many of us, it goes against our "value"
system that has
us believing humility is a virtue. Don't promote yourself: let
others
do it for you. We bring that belief system to our work and careers.
The results are that most of us barely scratch the surface of
what
we're capable of doing and deserve having.
In the "ideal" and mythical
world of fantasy, nobody would have
to promote because everyone's talent would be recognized and
rewarded accordingly. When was the last time you were recognized
and rewarded accordingly? How often has that happened to you?
In the real world, we get recognized
and rewarded based on how
well we promote ourselves, not necessarily how well we perform.
There are great performers in every walk of life who never get
paid what they're "really" worth (they never ask for
it), and who
don't get the recognition and promotions they deserve. There
are plenty of "average" people who make obscene amounts
of
money and achieve great success because they promote themselves
well.
Here's the Pearl: ALL PROMOTION IS SELF-PROMOTION.
Another Pearl: Promoters aren't born;
they're learned.
Contrary to Success B.S.
we don't get what we expect.
We don't even get what we deserve (don't you deserve more?).
WE GET WHAT
WE ASK FOR!
In many cases, we get what we don't ask for (by default)!
We get what we promote! Most of
us aren't coming close to
getting what's possible for us. Not me, and I'll bet, not you.
If you don't promote yourself,
it's highly unlikely you'll be
promoted by others. This is true whether you work for yourself
or you work for someone else. People who wait for promotions
are usually disappointed when they don't come. Those who ASK
for promotions are more likely to get them, now or in the future.
As distasteful as it may be, the
real world truth is that you and
I are 100% responsible for every promotion we get, or don't get.
If the company you work for won't recognize and reward your
talent, find one that will. Either way, you'll have to promote
yourself. If you're self-employed, you know how vital advertising
and promotion are to business success. The truth is:
"A terrible thing happens when you don't advertise: nothing!"
If we teach our children how to
promote themselves in all aspects
of life, livelihood and living, we give them the gift of a skill
that
will serve them forever.
One of the key Success-Abilities
is vis-ability.
We can all use a little pump up on our promote-ability.
In order for us to teach our children, first...

When (Women) Professionals Step Down...
Over the past few years, men and
women have been swapping
roles. Expanding roles may be a better way to put it. Lines of
distinction are evaporating.
It's a difficult challenge to
live a balanced life in today's world,
especially with so much of the focus on external measures of
success. Many of us feel out of balance in one or more areas
of life.
New models for living are emerging.
We're finding better ways
of doing our work in order to have more time for being with
family and loved ones, and enjoy the other pleasures of life.
Women face difficult family and
career choices. Men are also
working hard to manage these responsibilities. We all want to
make a good living and still have time to enjoy the things money
can't buy. Although women get most of the media attention when
it comes to family and career juggling, raising a family in an
inter-
dependent world is a joint response-ability. Men are more involved
than ever.
Roles are no longer clear-cut,
nor are they stigmatized as they once
were. Women now make up more than 50% of the workforce, men
are taking on more homemaking response-ability... and enjoying
it.
Surprising to many old-world thinkers,
a father can be as nurturing,
compassionate, empathic and loving to his children as a mother
can
be. Men can do more than chauffeur kids and fix things: they cook,
clean, do dishes and laundry, iron, even change diapers. They
coach,
show up for activities and help with homework.
You can't measure parenting using
traditional models of success that
have external reward systems. Parenting is an inside job.
It doesn't come with recognition, plaques or awards. The rewards
are
personal, intrinsic, spiritual.
There is NO more important work
than raising our children, to teach
them to value themselves and others. It's important they learn
early
and often that they matter... more than anything else.
People from all walks of life
are re-designing their lives to spend time
and attention on things that matter most. We're defining success
more
by how much time we spend with our family and loved ones than
how
many hours we put in at the office.
The year 2002
is a year of infinite poss-abilities.
The first 10 years of the 21st century represent a decade of infinite
poss-abilities. Connect the two zeroes and you get the infinity
sign.
It's also a time of individual poss-ability.
All things possible start with
you. You have the power to influence and
impact your world, and everyone in it. Most important, you impact
your
own life, the one and only one over which you have total control.
Claim your authority. Speak what's
on your mind. Voice your opinion.
Allow others to do the same. Raise the level of discussion from
the
screaming and splashing of tabloids to the substance of truth
and
