There are days that go by, weeks sometimes
where I find my
candle flickers. Sometimes the flame goes completely out.
What often snuffs out my candle is the battle
I have with the
worthy, entitled and deserving gremlins running around in my head.
You know those guys? The ones that chirp
in your ear about why
you're not entitled to earn a better living, deserving of a full
livelihood, and worthy of enjoying a rich life.
Sometimes it takes someone else to fire
me up again. Seems when
things are going well the gremlins like to come out and play!
The gremlins tell me I'm not worthy, entitled
and deserving.
The gremlins like to sabotage my thinking.
Why do nearly 90% of us under-value and
diminish our self-worth,
self-esteem and self-value? It's a disease of global proportion.
Add together all the illnesses known to
humankind, and it doesn't
begin to approach the staggering number of people walking the
planet criticizing and diminishing themselves. Some of us do it
out loud.
Dr. Robert Hartman was a 20th century pioneer,
yet very few people
have heard of him. His legacy to humanity was that he gave us
a way to
measure human values with amazing accuracy and simplicity. His
Hartman Value Profile is the only known instrument that uses the
science of Axiology (values and value logic) to assess values.
His work was so well respected, he was nominated
for a Nobel Prize
in 1973. Unfortunately, he died that same year.
Since Dr. Hartman's death more than a half-million
people in dozens
of countries and from every walk of life have completed value
profiles.
They reveal a truly staggering pattern:
nearly 90% of us pay less
attention to the inner SELF, than to what we do or where we're
going.
Nine out of 10 of us undervalue who we are as people.
This is as true for the wealthy, famous
and powerful among us as
it is for the poor, invisible and powerless.
IT IS THE BIGGEST EPIDEMIC ON THE PLANET.
Another pattern we see showing up a lot
lately is stress. The
Value Profile actually tells us how well we're dealing with seven
different levels of stress. It's no big surprise that people are
feeling very stressed these days, even if on the outside they
seem the picture of calm. Stress suppressed is unhealthy.
We're not born this way. We learn to undervalue
ourselves. By
the time we reach age 18, we are already mentally conditioned
to
believe we are less than. We spend the rest of our life feeling
less
than worthy, entitled and deserving.
Like all other forms of dis-ease, it not
only affects adults,
it's now afflicting our children in alarming numbers.
We know that psycho, the mind CAN make soma,
the body sick.
It's no accident that degenerative diseases are also spreading
at epidemic levels. Are we making the connection?
The pressure to perform and the almost obsessive
push to "be all
we can be" generate enormous stress, mentally and emotionally.
They take us away from being and turn our attention to doing and
going. On top of it all
Bad news, worry, guilt, hate, anger, revenge,
violence, and war
occupy our waking hours. People deceive, attack, bully, kidnap,
maim and kill to get what they want, or to get others to do or
think like they want. This new and especially virulent strain
of
madness has infected our world and it's spreading quickly.
Every day, somewhere, someone is blowing
up a building or
blowing out a candle. Or worse, snuffing out a life.
This cycle must stop.
The solution is old-fashioned. It's one
that seems to have gone very
much out of style. The answer is simple, but clearly, it's not
easy.
We don't have to get back our self-worth
or value. It is ever present.
We just need to plug into it and put our attention back on it.
WE MUST MAKE LOVE, COMPASSION AND EMPATHY IMPORTANT AGAIN.
WE MUST MAKE THEM MOST IMPORTANT.
With love comes compassion, with compassion
comes empathy.
If we feel love, compassion and empathy for ourselves, and model
it to our children, they will carry it into the world with them.
With empathy and compassion for others,
we see them as brothers
and sisters to be loved, not enemies to be defeated or destroyed.
To label some people as evil pre-supposes
we are good. Nobody
is pure evil, and nobody is purely good. Good people do evil things.
Even religious evangelists who preach the gospel from the podium
speak the "evil" tongue in the privacy of the back room.
Everybody HAS cancer, but not everybody
GETS cancer. Each
of us has the seeds of evil, but very few of us do evil things.
When you consider the number of people on the planet, it's a
few who kill and destroy, blow up buildings and blow out candles.
But fanaticism is a difficult force to contend with.
The spark that kept Dr. Hartman's fire going
for 40 years, the
burning question he searched his entire life to understand, was
WHY DO GOOD PEOPLE DO BAD THINGS?
He found the answer in Axiology, the science of values.
He called it "systemic abuse"
when a person is willing to injure
or even kill another who doesn't agree with his point of view.
It's an extreme, deeply embedded and conditioned belief that
you, your thinking and your way of life are right. You come to
a
very logical conclusion that the right(eous)ness of your belief
justifies attacking and destroying any ideology, belief system
or way of life that doesn't agree with yours.
Hartman said systemic abuse is how extremism
and fanaticism
take control of a person, and eventually a society. Systemic
abuse is the early conditioning of children to believe that the
system (ideology) is valued above people. If you are trained
from childhood to believe that your pathway to heaven is to
die, and take as many human beings with you, there is a
"VALUE'S INVERSION!"
When someone is controlled by a belief system
(ideology, myth),
he is convinced that his way of thinking is the absolute and only
way. If he subordinates the intrinsic sanctity of human life to
the
absolute allegiance to his brand of system, he has inverted value.
The purpose of any system is to perpetuate
itself. Inside a system,
humans lose their identity and individuality. We become numbers.
We lose our connection to our humanity.
Systems desensitize and dehumanize us.
They are meant to be our servants, not our masters.
.
Extremists who become fanatical feel it is their moral calling
to
impose their ways of thinking and living on others, by force if
necessary. When people are willing to kill for the sake of their
beliefs, fanaticism turns into terrorism.
Axiology explains it.
Dr. Hartman defined it, and warned of it back in the 1960's.
Now, we're watching it "live" on CNN, 24 hours a day.
The single biggest challenge of our generation
is to find a way
to eradicate this powerful virus of hate that threatens our world
and the possibilities for a peaceful future.
We must reverse this value's inversion or
we will squander our
chance to leave a legacy of peace for our children.
IF we eradicate self-hate, love stands a
chance. Where love is,
peace follows.
It starts with YOU LOVING YOU for WHO YOU ARE.
It's accepting yourself without any conditions.
It's not measured
by what or how much you do. It's not compared to others. It's
not
judged by how much you have. It's not based on how far you go
in
life. Those are all important, BUT ALL OF THEM COMBINED
AREN'T AS VALUABLE AS YOU.
Self-image and self-concept are NOT who
you are.
You are NOT who you imagine yourself to be.
You are NOT the ideal concept of yourself.
You are so much more than that.
You are simply the most valuable life on the planet.
Self-love is...
Self-acceptance (you for
who you really are).
Self-appreciation (for your one-of-a-kind uniqueness).
Self-approval (you don't need others to approve of you).
Self-worth (you are INvaluable JUST BECAUSE YOU ARE).
Self-deserving (to share in the abundance of this great universe).
Self-confidence (in what you choose, and how you perform).
Self-direction (a desire to do better, not having to "be"
better).
Self-validation (nobody is invalid you don't need validation).
Self-determination (choosing for you, not to live up to others).
Self-expectation (allow expectations to inspire you, not control
you).
Self-actualization (actualize in the moment, not the future).
What if self-actualization is nothing more
than BEING fully present
in the moment, living in the right here and right now?
Your world is where your attention is, RIGHT
NOW!
RIGHT NOW IS THE WORLD!
Is your world self-fulfilled? Self-fulfilled
is full of SELF!
Is your "SELF" full?
Then again, maybe we NEVER "actually" actualize.
Maybe actualization is a contradiction in
terms can perfect
really fulfill itself? There is no "perfect" purpose,
spouse,
work or life. In the "real" world there is always something
missing. Nothing in the real world is perfect. In the ideal world
we see a vision of how it could be just a little better, a little
more
perfect. Real life doesn't seem to measure up to ideal life.
The truth is, real life is so much better
because it lacks perfection.
We seek perfection in the ideal world, and come up short in the
real world. All the while, we look right past the perfection that
is already within us.
YOU ARE THE PERFECT YOU.
THERE IS NOTHING TO BECOME.
When we get back to that natural state of
being in love with SELF,
we will no longer define ourselves by what we do or worse, what
we
DON'T do.
We are NOT our work - we DO our work.
We are NOT our wealth we HAVE our wealth.
We are NOT our purpose we CREATE our purpose(s).
WE ARE WHO WE ARE, with everything in place,
complete.
Your work, your wealth and even your mission(s) are finite.
YOU are infinite; special, unique and irreplaceable.
THINGS come and go. They are icing on the
cake. You don't
need to DO anything, HAVE anything or GO anyplace to BE
VALUABLE and VALID.
YOU ALREADY ARE... Spiritual... Infinite!
There are no invalid people.
There are no insignificant people.
There are only invaluable people.
When I really get that about myself, I am
free and peaceful.
When we ALL get that, freedom and peace will break out everywhere.
I pray that day is coming soon.

A Case of Coach-Ability!
What we can learn from
Mike Piazza.
In 1981, I played semi-pro baseball in Florida.
That year,
I was fortunate to get a tryout with the St. Louis Cardinals.
I didn't get signed to a contract, but to this day it's one of
the special thrill rides of my life.
Before the tryout, I spent a few days at
Bucky Dent's baseball
camp. If you are a fan of baseball and over 30, you remember
Bucky Dent. He was the New York Yankee shortstop that
broke the hearts of every living Boston Red Sox fan with his
winning home run in a thrilling one-game playoff in 1978. The
Yankees went on to win the World Series, and Bucky Dent's
bat went to the Hall of Fame. Being a shortstop and growing
up a Yankee fan, spending time with Dent at his camp was like
a dream come true for me.
At the time, I was in my 20's. Everyone
else at this camp was
under 17. I was closer in age to the coaches than the players,
so
I got to spent time with Bucky and his staff, all former major
leaguers. I had a great time learning, and an even better time
listening to baseball stories.
Yesterday I read that Mike Piazza the future
Hall of Famer from
the New York Mets, and arguably the greatest hitting catcher
ever, hired Steve Yeager, former Los Angeles Dodger catcher to
coach him. Where? At Bucky Dent's Baseball Camp.
Mike Piazza has developed one of the most
important and vital
Success-Abilities, a crucial life skill for the 21st century:
Coach-Ability!
Why would one of the greatest catchers of
all time hire a personal

5. STOP CREDIT AGENCIES FROM RENTING
YOUR NAME!

Most Americans don't know that the major personal credit-rating
agencies are allowed to rent the names and telephone contact
information of everyone in their files, which probably includes
you.
This is a major source of names and phone numbers for tele-
marketers and banks that are promoting credit cards through direct
mail.
If you don't take specific action to stop
this fully legal invasion of
your privacy, it will go on.
OPT OUT of MAIL LISTS
A little-known federal law was passed in
1999 which forces these
credit agencies to set up an "opt-out" program for you
to secure
privacy for your name and contact information. This requires a
call to a toll-free telephone number. Very few people know about
this phone number.
The mailing list rental business is very
profitable. These companies
have no incentive to shrink the size of their lists, which would
shrink their income. So, they do not widely publicize this opt-out
option. You won't be seeing an "opt out now" ad on prime-time
TV.
On their opt-out phone tree, they give you
a two-year name-removal
option as your first choice. They do not offer the permanent removal
option until #3, the final option.
When you call, WAIT FOR OPTION 3.
You will be asked for your phone number,
your address, your name
(spoken and spelled), and your Social Security number. Go ahead
and provide this information; they already have it, and a lot
more.
The point is, you don't want tele-marketers and direct-mail solicitors
to be able to rent any of this information.
If you do nothing, then you are implicitly
saying, "Come and get me!
I love junk mail! I love it when tele-marketers call me!"
Call this number:
1-888-567-8688 (1-888-5 OPT OUT).
Again, WAIT FOR OPTION 3.
After you provide the required information,
you will be mailed a
form that you must fill out in order to be removed from all of
the
companies' list rentals. Fill it out and mail it back.
NOTE: Gary authorizes you to forward this

e-mail address book or on your in-house e-mail list. Very few
people know that their names are now being rented by these credit
agencies. They don't know that they can put a stop to this practice
with a phone call. They deserve to know. Tell them.
