Network-ability is a vital ingredient of market-ability. If you can improve your ability to network, there is nothing beyond your reach.

Are you in the "Internet" business?

Here's a quick quiz. Which of these statements about the Internet is true?

1. It's a whole new paradigm.
2. It's a marketing bonanza.
3. It's a communications breakthrough.
4. It's a hot business.
5. It's a gold mine of opportunity.

Last weekend, I attended the Internet Marketing Super Conference. Yes, it WAS super. More than 100 authorities in their fields came together to share, cooperate, collaborate, and swap deals. It's rare in business to find people so eager to share their wisdom and experience, and open to creating alliances, joint ventures, and partnering opportunities.

Statement #1 is definitely true. The Internet IS a whole new paradigm. The "real" world of business is one of competition, where rivals may be cordial at cocktail parties, but in the boardroom they preach divide and conquer, and survival of the fittest. In the Internet "space" (I love that word), the paradigm is one of cooperation and collaboration, sharing and aligning.

I noticed a big difference between this conference and others. In the "real" world of business, most people see their rivals as the enemy who is trying to take away their share of a fixed or limited pie (zero sum game). At this conference, people approached their rivals to partner and join together to expand the pie for everyone, especially the consumer. That's a major paradigm shift, and a marketing bonanza.

Statement #2 is also true. The Internet IS a marketing bonanza.

If you have ANY desire to be successful on the Internet, and you weren't at this conference, you'd be crazy not to get the tapes. This is one set of tapes I will use to leverage my business and income for the rest of my life (note: next week I'll tell you how you can order the tapes, and get all the conference notes ­ these are worth a fortune).

So statement #3 is true. The Internet IS a communications breakthrough. You can receive more than 30 hours of detailed conference notes, words of wisdom from the most successful Internet business owners in the world, delivered to your email box in a nanosecond, for a fraction of the cost of attending the conference itself. WOW.

YES, statement #5 is true. The Internet IS a gold mine of opportunity.

Let's get back to the quiz.

How did you answer? Did you say all five statements are true?

All the statements ARE true... except #4. The Internet is a hot business. NOT!

Although I was not on the original agenda, Carl Galletti asked me to speak. In the first five minutes I said, "the Internet is NOT a hot business." That woke 'em up at 8am on Saturday morning.

The Internet IS many things. It's a

* whole new paradigm,
* marketing bonanza,
* communications breakthrough, and yes, it IS a
* gold-mine of opportunity.

But the Internet is NOT a hot business. In fact, the Internet is NOT a business at all.

There is really no such thing as an "Internet" business. People and businesses use the Internet to advertise, to sell products and services in order to generate revenue and profit. This is not to be confused with the dot.bombs that didn't seem to worry about such trifles as profits and net income.

The Internet itself is NOT a business. It is a vehicle to attract, convert and keep customers to a business; to do research and for all kinds of learning; to spread the word and build community for an issue or cause.

The Internet is a communications medium. For people at the conference, this was a slight, but important shift of perception. For many, it will prove to be the tipping point. This shift of perception opens up more possibilities about what you can do on the Internet.

A presence on the Internet is also NOT a business. If you have no product, no service, no issue, no cause, YOU HAVE NO BUSINESS. If you have no method or system to generate revenue and make money, it's NOT a business. It may be a hobby. That's fine. Just don't confuse a hobby with a business.

ANYONE can start a business. Only one in 20 stay in business, long term. Part of our mission is to TIP your chances of being in the 5% that stay the course. Another part of our mission is to increase those who succeed to 10% and higher.

You can use the Internet to build a business, but the Internet itself is not a business. The business is the product or service you sell, issue or cause you represent. There are many people on the Internet who don't have a (profitable) business. Far too many people have had no success and have lost money. Very few businesses have profited from the Internet. Amazon.com, the river of no returns, is the perfect example of a business with no profit, and a slim chance of ever making one. Slimmer still is the possibility investors will see their money.

Most people don't have the luxury of losing a billion dollars of someone else's money. Only in America could a man lose a billion dollars of investor money and be celebrated as Time Magazine Man of the Year! Do I smell a little Success BS?

The Internet is the 21st century version of the 1800's gold rush, and is akin to a speculative investment. It's really speculative if you come to the game without the tools, experience, expert guidance, and a team of advisors.

In issue #9, I suggested it's wise to "know the odds" of a choice or decision. It's just as important in "cyberspace" as it is here on earth to tilt the odds in your favor. What I learned last weekend at the Internet Marketing Super Conference will tip the odds in my favor, FOREVER.

There is no replacement for or shortcut to experience and wisdom. If you don't have it, you must get it. You don't have all the time in the world to get it by trial and error. Life is too short to learn or do EVERYTHING, ourselves.

If you can access someone else's lifetime of wisdom and experience, buy it.

Last Saturday morning, I opened my talk by asking a question:

"Do you really want to learn how to fish, or would you prefer that I just give you the fish, RIGHT NOW?"

They all raised their hands and shouted, "GIVE ME THE FISH." Case closed.

I'm putting the age-old mantra of "teach me how to fish" into my Success BS note book. The truth is, people aren't as interested in "learning" as they are in "fishing."

I'm putting my attention on GIVING YOU THE FISH.

You put your attention and get clear on one thing

"What business are you in?"

In the coming weeks, I'll share some of the more potent strategies and simple steps you can take to generate revenue and build your business online.

We'll talk about how you can generate leads, jump-start your sales, boost your profits, and increase your income. Using the Internet, it can happen quickly.

After four, 12-hour days of non-stop speakers sharing money making secrets and business-building strategies, tactics and methods, I was on overdrive. As I process, I will share it with you.

You'll see what we do to implement these strategies, and how we are re-creating our main web site http://axelrodlearning.com and shortly, sister sites like Axelrod.tv and SalesAlchemy.com (both coming soon). If you see something that can work for you, replicate that for yourself.

One big advantage of the Internet is it enables you to streamline your business, automate your operations, and test any and every kind of communication, survey, offer, ad or product.

Using the Internet, I generate all three kinds of income: active, passive and residual. In the coming issues, we'll describe the different ways we generate all three kinds of income using the Internet, and how YOU CAN, TOO.

Here are a few of the "to-do's" I committed to do after last weekend. Maybe this will stimulate you to do one or more of these, yourself.

* set up an affiliate program;
* do joint ventures with people who have large email lists;
* feature more endorsements and testimonials on my web site;
* link any and all reviews of my products and press I've gotten;
* get online systems automated and have someone track the statistics;
* create a world-wide network of marketing ninja (thanks Marlon Sanders);
* evaluate http://www.signio.com for merchant services and eCommerce;
* look at http://www.killercover.com for book and eBook covers;
* do eZine article swaps and get my articles published all over the world;
* share great content and expand our community through viral marketing;
* offer a series of introductory "taster" products for $10 to $20 such as eBooks, audio tapes, RealAudio online, special reports, etc.;
* create a 7-session mini-training and deliver it by auto-responder, FREE;
* record every conference and seminar digitally in real time, and have a studio in my home to broadcast world-wide via the Internet (Axelrod.tv).

The last one REALLY excites me. Imagine, anyone can create their own television network on the Internet. Do you have something to say that others want to hear? If so, find a way to get your seat at the Internet broadcasting table. Don't get left out.

That's a portion of my "to-do" list. Is there one you can apply right now? If so, do it. Don't wait until you get it perfect. Remember, perfection is a myth and a set-up. One of the recurring themes throughout the conference from every speaker and attendee alike was...

Don't wait until you get it perfect. Just get it going.

The Internet is an action medium. It's a dynamic environment that is changing faster than the speed of life. It is too time-consuming and costly to approach this medium by trial and error alone.

Learn from the people who have created success, then modify and apply it to your situation. Stay with us and we'll guide you. We'll share what we do. In the process, you'll save precious time and probably, a wheelbarrow full of money.

"The light bulbs flashing were not on the slot machines! It just amazes me how many people just really don't get it at all.
